We're in a Race Against Time!

Act Now to Conquer Alzheimer's Disease

Advocacy moves our concern for persons with Alzheimer's disease and their families into the capitals of every state, the offices of virtually every US Senator and Representative, and even the White House. Add your voice to those working towards a world without Alzheimer's.

Research Offers Hope

Advocating for $1 billion for Alzheimer research is a top priority for the Alzheimer's Association. This funding is necessary for an all-out assault on Alzheimer's disease to:

  • Find the way to keep 14 million baby boomers from getting the disease
  • Slow the decline in those who have the disease now
  • Begin a major collaborative initiative on vascular disease and Alzheimer's disease

Without intensive research, Alzheimer's will continue to incur immense costs to families and business and government programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

Congress is Key.
A $1 Billion Investment in Alzheimer Research is Needed NOW.

The Alzheimer's Association, both Nationally and at the Chapter Level, will be urging Congress to restore the cuts proposed in the President's FY' 07 Budget that pose significant harm for Alzheimer's families.

Here are the realities of the Bush Budget:

Research - funding for Azheimer's research at the National Insititutes of Health would be cut by $7 million from $652 million in FY' 06 to $645 million in FY' 07. Overall, funding for all research programs at the NIH was frozen. When medical inflation is taken into account, the freeze or cuts are even more devasting.

Alzheimer Demonstration Grants to the States - This program was eliminated in the President's Budget for FY' 07. Congress approved $11.6 million in funding for the current fiscal year. Thus, grants will be renewed or initiated in July of this year. But, unless Congress restores this program, this would be the last funding cycle for the program.

CDC Brain Health Project - This program, which was included in the President's budget last year at $1.6 million, would be zeroed out in FY' 07. The budget document specifically identifies this as a program that was eliminated.

Safe Return - The President's requests no funds for the Safe Return program. Safe Return, however, has not been included in the President's budget for the past couple of years, but Congress has appropriated the funds.

Contact Center - No funding was included for the Alzheimer's Association's contact center. This may be less significant because the program was initiated by Congress and has never been included in the budget submitted by the president.
